New LP - Drunkdriver - Self Titled - There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this, the final Drunkdriver LP.
Accusations of sexual assault and the internet rumor mill ran wild a few months
back. The band has since broken up and according to the internet, at least two
labels and at least one major distributor refused to deal with it. All of this hoopla
has been a damn shame, 'cuz this is a great swan song of a record that deserves
to be recognized for more than just the controversy surrounding it's release.
Luckily, the band comes from a DIY background and they decided to say fuck all
the bullshit and they self-released their self-titled LP. Here's what the band had
to say about the ordeal:
"After getting a lot of support from our friends and strangers, we have decided
to put the record out ourselves. It is by far our best record and it is prophetic
in imagery, muscial and lyrical content and we are still very proud of our band.
Though it ended on a depressing note it did complete the art project.
The record will be limited to a one time pressing of 1000 without repress.
It features deluxe tip-on style jackets and who knows....maybe a few extra
surprises."
As far as we can tell, there are no surprises with this one, except the quality of
the record. The "Fire Sale" 7" aside, this is our favorite Drunkdriver release.
Man, that "Fire Sale" single was a ripper, but it was way more dirge-y than most
of the cuts on this LP. "Drunkdriver" is a straight-up hardcore punk record for
the new millennia. It's a damn shame that they won't be putting out any more
records. Like the band said, there's only 1000 of these and it won't be pressed
again. It's slowly going the way of "Jane Doe" (aka long out-of-print and highly
sought after).
